Michigan's Gattis wins Broyles Award as best assistant coach in CFB

Michigan offensive coordinator Josh Gattis is the recipient of the 2021 Broyles Award recognizing the best assistant coach in college football.

Gattis joined the Wolverines in 2019 and has helped lead them to their first Big Ten title since 2004 as well as the No. 2 spot in the final College Football Playoff rankings.

Since Gattis took over as offensive coordinator, Michigan also won its first rivalry game against Ohio State in 10 years, as the Wolverines defeated the Buckeyes 42-27 on Nov. 27.

The offense under Gattis ran the ball for 297 yards and six touchdowns on the ground, averaging 7.2 yards per carry against Ohio State. Michigan scored 42 points and put up more than 450 yards of offense in each of its last two games.

Baylor offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes, Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning, Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, and Wake Forest offensive coordinator Warren Ruggiero were the other finalists for the award.
