Brian Kelly will begin his tenure as LSU head coach with a big question mark at quarterback.

Signal-caller Max Johnson is entering the transfer portal after two seasons, he announced Tuesday.

Johnson tossed 27 touchdowns to six interceptions while completing 60.3% of his passes through 12 appearances this year. He also appeared in six games last season, amassing eight touchdowns against one pick.

The sophomore took over the starting role in 2021 after Myles Brennan suffered an offseason injury. Brennan also entered the portal in November, leaving Garrett Nussmeier as the Tigers' primary quarterback option for 2022.

LSU has struggled since winning the national title in 2019. The Tigers, who play in the Texas Bowl on Jan. 4 against Kansas State, went 6-6 in 2021.

They agreed to part ways with head coach Ed Orgeron at the end of the regular season, ending his six-year stint with the school. Kelly signed a 10-year, $95-million contract with LSU last week after agreeing to leave Notre Dame in a stunning move.

Max's brother, Jake, who joined LSU's 2022 class as a four-star tight end in April, also decommitted on Tuesday.
