Gov. Cuomo looks to bring sports betting to New York
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo wants to introduce legal sports betting in the state in 2019, he said Tuesday.
"Let's authorize sports betting in the upstate casinos," Cuomo said during his State of the State address, according to ESPN's David Purdum. "It's here. It's a reality, and it will generate activity in those casinos."
In 2013, New York passed a law permitting four upstate casinos to offer in-person sports betting if it's allowed under federal law.
Last May, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992. After the ruling, Delaware, Mississippi, New Mexico, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and West Virginia opened sportsbooks, with more than 20 other states expected to follow suit.
Cuomo didn't elaborate on his betting plan, and the New York State Gaming Commission hasn't yet released any regulations for sports betting.
