49ers' Shanahan has 'beef' with NFL's hat rules

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is being forced to change his gameday wardrobe, and he isn't happy about it.

During an appearance on KNBR's "Murph and Mac" show Wednesday, Shanahan said the NFL is only allowing him to wear new and approved hats this season.

"I have such beef with them right now," Shanahan said. "It's a tough issue going on. They won't let me pick out my own one. They won't let me wear any one that's from a different year, so I can't wear, like, an older one. I've got to wear the new ones that they give this year and unfortunately there's none I like wearing. Hopefully, we can figure it out or wait until Salute to Service."

Shanahan has previously worn hats designed in partnership with New Era - most famously a red trucker cap that became known as "Shanahat." He retired that specific hat following the 49ers' disappointing 2020 season.

While Shanahan isn't hiding his frustration with the league's hat rules, he also doesn't want to risk being fined.

"It's just deals," he said. "I don't want to go too hard and get fined or anything but trust me, trust me, I'm upset about it."
