The NFL has suspended Dallas Cowboys pass-rusher David Irving for the first four games of the upcoming season for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

The two-year pro learned of the possibility of a suspension in May after he failed a drug test. He claimed then that the positive test for a performance-enhancing drug was related to a supplement he was marketing.

Irving emerged in his sophomore season, recording four sacks and forcing four fumbles in 15 games of action. His absence for the first four games of the year hurts an already-thin Cowboys defensive line.

Irving has had a tumultuous football career. He was kicked out of Iowa State during his senior season and was arrested and charged with domestic assault in November 2013, though thcharges were eventually dropped. He then went undrafted and was signed to the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad before the Cowboys poached him.

He played in 12 games during his rookie season and made a minimal impact.
