Redskins' Nicholson charged with assault

Washington Redskins safety Montae Nicholson was arrested Tuesday morning in Virginia and charged with misdemeanor assault, according to The Washington Post's Ann E. Marimow and Kareem Copeland.

The incident, which Marimow and Copeland characterized as a drunken fight, occurred near the Redskins' practice facility close to 2 a.m. after the safety and a female companion, 24-year-old Sydney A. Maggiore, pulled up in a vehicle and honked the horn at a man and woman, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's office. The safety and his companion then got out of the car and things "turned physical," according to the sheriff's office spokesperson Kraig Troxell. Nicholson and Maggiore are accused of assaulting the man, while Maggiore is also accused of striking the woman with a bottle.

A court appearance hasn't been scheduled.

The victims were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

"We are aware of the arrest of Montae Nicholson," Redskins spokesperson Tony Wyllie said in a statement. "We are gathering more information and will not comment until we have further details."

Nicholson, a Michigan State alum, was a fourth-round pick of the Redskins in the 2017 NFL Draft. He started in seven games this season but was benched in favor of Ha Ha Clinton-Dix after the former Green Bay Packers safety was acquired in late October.
