Giants HC Shurmur: Eli's 'had no response' to Jones pick

Eli Manning is famous for his unflappable approach to life, and the New York Giants quarterback was apparently the only person to not have a strong reaction to the selection of his heir apparent, Daniel Jones.

"He's had no response," Shurmur said, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan. "I will say this again: I've never been around a person that can stay in the moment better than Eli. And I think that is something that is really, really unique about him. He's staying in the moment."

After passing on Sam Darnold and Josh Allen with the No. 2 overall pick last year, the Giants drafted the former Duke quarterback with the first of their three first-round picks in the 2019 draft (sixth overall).

General manager Dave Gettleman hinted after the draft that New York could follow the Aaron Rodgers-Brett Favre model by sitting Jones for multiple years behind Manning, who Gettleman has insisted has years left in the tank despite a poor 2018 campaign.

The 38-year-old finished 21st in passer rating, 25th in ESPN's QBR metric, and 31st out of 38 qualifying quarterbacks in Pro Football Focus' grading system. Manning will also be without his top weapon from the last five seasons, Odell Beckham Jr., who was traded to the Cleveland Browns after racking up nearly 5,500 receiving yards to start his NFL career.

Shurmur believes Manning is primed to surprise in 2019 despite the drama surrounding the Beckham and Jones decisions.

"He's training to play and have a terrific season," Shurmur said. "He looks really good out here throwing and moving, doing all the things necessary. It's his second year in our system. So he knows what he's doing better than some of the guys teaching it."
