Report: New CBA won't be in place before NFL season opener

No discussions between the NFL and the NFLPA are scheduled over the next week, meaning a new collective bargaining agreement won't be in place before the 2019 season begins, sources told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Dialogue between both parties is reportedly positive and they may reconvene at some point in September, Pelissero added.

The sticking point in current talks is reportedly the owners' desire to extend the regular season, while players want a larger share of revenue without adding games. Preseason is reportedly likely to be shortened and both parties are apparently open to expanding the playoff field as a way to make up for the lost revenue.

The NFL and NFLPA reportedly made progress in negotiations on other issues, including benefits for current and retired players, player health and safety, and raising minimum salaries.

The current CBA is set to expire following the 2020 season.
