Kitchens stands by Mayfield: 'I truly do not look at stats'

Freddie Kitchens doesn't believe raw numbers tell the full story of Baker Mayfield's 2019 struggles.

Following his team's fourth straight loss on Sunday, the Cleveland Browns head coach addressed the quarterback's dip in accuracy from his rookie season.

"There's a lot of factors that go into that," Kitchens told reporters when asked about Mayfield's low completion percentage, according to 92.3 The Fan's Keith Britton. "I don't think he's just wildly missing passes. I don't really look at that. I truly do not look at stats."

After showing signs of a future NFL franchise quarterback in his first campaign, Mayfield has surprisingly declined in 2019, tossing just seven touchdowns to 12 interceptions.

Despite the passer's inconsistencies, Kitchens believes Mayfield has the tools to turn his season around.

"He has to have the mindset of the game of football is tough," Kitchens said. "It's a tough game played by tough people. He's a tough individual. Baker will be fine. He just has to stay in the moment.

"I think Baker's got a unique ability like a lot of great QBs have, a short memory," he added. "They don't worry about the last play, move on to the next one."
