San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan announced Sunday that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will miss the remainder of the season due to a broken foot, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

"He'll be out, he'll need surgery, broke a few things in there," said Shanahan.

The veteran had his left foot trapped awkwardly under a Miami Dolphins defender's knee while being tackled in the first quarter of Sunday's 33-17 win.

He was carted to the locker room after briefly being attended to by trainers on the sideline.

Brock Purdy played the rest of the game, finishing with 210 yards and two touchdowns against one interception. The seventh-round rookie will presumably be San Francisco's starter moving forward.

"It was crushing. I got the news in the second quarter," Shanahan said, according to Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury. "It was a hell of a job by Brock coming in and stepping up. We'll be ready to do our best to overcome this."

The loss of Garoppolo is the latest major blow at quarterback for the Super Bowl hopefuls. He took over for Trey Lance in Week 2 after the sophomore suffered a season-ending ankle injury.

The 31-year-old has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career. He missed most of 2018 after tearing his ACL and suffered a season-ending ankle injury midway through the 2020 campaign.

Garoppolo has played well since stepping in for Lance, throwing for 2,381 yards and 16 touchdowns against four interceptions. He completed 2 of 4 passes for 56 yards before exiting against Miami.

Purdy - who was taken with the final pick in the 2022 draft - had only appeared in three games before Week 13, completing 4 of 9 passes for 66 yards and one interception.

The 49ers bolstered their quarterback room by signing Josh Johnson off the Denver Broncos' practice squad, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Johnson has had three previous stints in San Francisco, but he's never appeared in a game for the club.
