Rodgers weighing future, thinks he can win MVP again in 'right situation'

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is open to continuing his playing career outside of Green Bay.

"I think I can win MVP again in the right situation. ... Is that Green Bay or somewhere else? I'm not sure," Rodgers said on "The Pat McAfee Show" on Tuesday, per NFL.com's Kevin Patra. "But I don't think you should shut down any opportunity."

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said after the season that Rodgers will take some time to decide on his playing future. Gutekunst added that he'd like Rodgers to return as their starting quarterback.

Rodgers signed a three-year contract extension last offseason, which includes $101.4 million in guarantees. He has a $31.6-million cap hit in 2023, according to Over The Cap.

"It's got to be both sides actually wanting to work together moving forward," Rodgers said. "I think there's more conversations to be had. I think no player wants to be a part of any type of rebuild."

Several Packers starters are set to become free agents this offseason, including wide receiver Allen Lazard, tight end Robert Tonyan Jr., and safety Adrian Amos.

Some of Rodgers' longtime teammates, including tight end Marcedes Lewis and wide receiver Randall Cobb, are also set to hit the open market.

"This game is about relationships," Rodgers said. "It's about guys you rely on, even if they don't show up huge in the stat book. A guy like Marcedes Lewis, he's an important cog in the wheel of the locker room and the momentum of the team. That's a guy I want to finish my career with. ... I want the Randall Cobbs of the world, if he wants to keep playing, in my locker room."

Green Bay drafted quarterback Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 draft. Love - who has a fifth-year option for 2024 - stepped in for an injured Rodgers in Week 12 against the Philadelphia Eagles, completing six passes for 113 yards and one touchdown.
