Maple Leafs' Matthews, Stolarz injured in loss to Bruins

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews exited Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Boston Bruins due to a lower-body injury, the team announced.

Matthews fell awkwardly after getting hit from behind by Bruins defenseman Nikita Zadorov.

He went to the Leafs' dressing room after the play and never returned. Matthews logged just over 10 minutes of ice time with no points and one hit before exiting.

"I don’t know exactly. I can’t give you a timeline or (tell you) how serious it is right now. I’m not sure when he hurt it to be honest with you," coach Craig Berube said about Matthews, according to The Athletic's Jonas Siegel.

Anthony Stolarz, who allowed three goals on 10 shots before leaving the contest with an upper-body injury, also didn't return. The 31-year-old goaltender wasn't on the bench for the start of the second period and was replaced by Dennis Hildeby.

"I don’t believe that’s serious. I think he’ll be fine," Berube said when asked about Stolarz' injury, according to Siegel.

Stolarz has struggled recently, posting a league-worst 4.05 goals against average since calling out his team following a loss to the Seattle Kraken on Oct. 19, according to Sportsnet.

The Leafs fell to 8-8-1 with the defeat. Their next contest comes Thursday at home against the Los Angeles Kings.
