Day withdraws from Match Play event to be with ailing mother

Jason Day has withdrawn from the World Golf Championship-Dell Technologies Match Play event at Austin Country Club, announcing he'll travel to Ohio to be with his ailing mother, Dening, who will undergo surgery Friday as part of treatment for lung cancer.

A tearful Day, who lost his father to cancer when he was young, explained the circumstances surrounding his mother's illness shortly after removing himself from the field following six holes Wednesday.

Doctors in Australia told Day's mother that her diagnosis was terminal. He since brought her to Ohio to undergo more testing and explore other options.
