Tiger Woods' 2018 comeback season is being recognized by the Golf Writers Association of America, which is honoring Woods as the latest recipient of the Ben Hogan Award.

The annual award is handed out to a player who's overcome a serious injury or physical handicap to remain active in golf. Woods underwent spinal fusion surgery last April - his fourth back surgery - but returned to contend in both the Open Championship and the PGA Championship before wrapping up the season with a win at the Tour Championship, his first victory in five years.

"I'm grateful to receive an award named after Mr. Hogan and to join a group of truly inspirational individuals," Woods said, according to Golf Channel's Will Gray. "I feel very fortunate that I was able to return to a normal life with my kids, and I understand what a privilege it is to play competitive golf again."

The other nominees for the award were Patrick Cantlay and Billy Harmon.

Woods will receive his award during the GWAA's annual awards dinner in April - the eve of the opening round of the 2019 Masters.
