Rickie Fowler has withdrawn from next week's Mayakoba Classic in Mexico due to an intestinal bacterial infection he contracted during his recent honeymoon, he told ESPN's Bob Harig.

"I am taking medicine prescribed by my physician," Fowler said. "But am not at full strength yet. As a result, I am ill-prepared to compete next week."

Fowler is suffering from an infection called Campylobacter jejuni, and his symptoms include cramps, fever, and pain. The illness began to affect him toward the end of his vacation after his October wedding.

The World No. 21 hasn't played since the Tour Championship in August and was recently excluded from the United States' Presidents Cup team when Tiger Woods announced his captain's picks. Fowler could be a front-runner to fill in if Brooks Koepka is unable to participate due to a lingering knee problem.

Some of the notable names set to appear in Mexico next week include Jason Day, Tony Finau, Kevin Kisner, and Matt Kuchar, among others.
