Hughes comes up just short again in the Dominican: 'Pretty disappointing'

Mackenzie Hughes held a share of the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship lead while standing on the 18th tee but bogeyed his final hole to cap his week in the Dominican Republic.

"It's pretty disappointing," Hughes said following his final-round 70. "I was really sloppy around the greens today, and I wasn't capitalizing where I should have been around the greens. As a result, I come up a couple (of shots) short."

Hughes needed a birdie on 18 to force a playoff with Hudson Swafford, but the bogey dropped him out of a runner-up position, which is where he placed at the Caribbean event in 2019.

"I know it's still a good week, it's just being close a lot in the last little while and, you know, when you get close to winning a tournament, there's a big difference between top five and a win," he continued. "So I'll keep looking, trying to get a little better, but yeah, a lot of positives this week."

The result is Hughes' third top-three finish of 2020 and the closest he's come to claiming his second Tour title since his near miss at the Honda Classic in March. His lone victory came at the 2016 RSM Classic.

The Canadian will also move inside the top 50 (No. 48) in the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time in his career following his showing in Punta Cana.
