Mike Weir will be the International team captain for the 2024 Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal Golf Club, the tournament announced Wednesday.

This will be the first time the Canadian serves as the team's captain, having served as a captain's assistant for the past three iterations (2022, 2019, 2017).

Weir was the first Canadian to play in a Presidents Cup when he made his debut in 2000. He'd go on to play in four more in the 2000s - the most of any Canadian.

The 52-year-old is one of the country's most successful professional golfers, highlighted by his Masters win in 2003. He earned seven additional PGA TOUR victories in his career. He now plays on the TOUR's Champions circuit, where he has one victory.

This is the first time the Presidents Cup will head back to Canada since 2007. That year, Weir famously defeated Tiger Woods in a singles match in front of a home crowd.

There's no shortage of Canadian players who could make the trip to Montreal with Weir.

Two Canadians - Corey Conners and Taylor Pendrith - were on the most recent Presidents Cup team when it was held at Quail Hollow in September. Since then, two other Canadians - Mackenzie Hughes and Adam Svensson - have both won on TOUR. Additionally, Adam Hadwin, currently ranked No. 73 in the world, was a member of the International team in both 2017 and 2019.
