Report: Red Sox offer Martinez 5-year deal worth roughly $125M
After a report surfaced Wednesday that the Boston Red Sox had offered free-agent slugger J.D. Martinez a five-year deal worth around $100 million, the outfielder's agent shot it down as "not accurate." It appears the inaccuracy may have been in the dollar amount, as the Red Sox are now said to have offered the 30-year-old a five-year deal worth roughly $125 million, according to a report from Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald.
Martinez has long been considered the top slugging candidate on the free-agent market, but his defensive shortcomings - along with a slow offseason in general - have seemingly negatively impacted his market.
Dating back to the beginning of the offseason, Martinez's agent, Scott Boras, was believed to be pursuing a deal worth $200 million for his client.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox have widely been believed to be the best fit for Martinez for the duration of the winter. However, re-signing Mitch Moreland back in December to a two-year contract may have complicated things.
The Arizona Diamondbacks, Toronto Blue Jays, and San Francisco Giants have also been mentioned in connection with Martinez at different times throughout the offseason, though their interest has apparently never materialized beyond rumors.
