Will Middlebrooks' season couldn't have gotten off to a worse start.

Appearing in just his second spring training game with the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday, the third baseman suffered a fractured left fibula following a collision with teammate Andrew Pullin during the eighth inning, manager Gabe Kapler told reporters, according to Jim Salisbury of NBC Philly.

Middlebrooks lay on the field in pain before eventually being carted off and taken to hospital.

The 29-year-old was in camp after agreeing to a minor-league deal with the Phillies last month. He hit .211/.231/.368 with four extra-base hits in 22 games with the Texas Rangers last season.
