Ajax sets European final record by fielding youthful XI
When 19-year-old Kasper Dolberg isn't the youngest player in your starting XI for a continental final, you're entering record-breaking territory.
That's precisely what Ajax did Wednesday, as the Dutch club set a new benchmark by naming the youngest-ever starting XI for a major European final ahead of its Europa League clash with Manchester United.
The youngest of Ajax's fresh-faced lineup is defender Matthijs de Ligt. At 17 years and 285 days old, the Dutchman becomes the youngest player to ever feature in a major European final.
The club, for its part, isn't concerned about relying heavily on someone with such limited experience; despite struggling in his debut with the Dutch national team, De Ligt has proven a composed, mature performer for Peter Bosz's side this season.
