The SEC announced Friday it has voted to allow in-person athletic activities on school campuses beginning June 8.

Athletes will be limited to voluntary activities by the NCAA and supervised by strength and conditioning staff amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The conference will also be taking preventative measures to combat the spread of coronavirus, which include a three-stage screening process before athletes arrive on campus, testing symptomatic team members, and an isolation period in the event of a positive test.

"Due to the impact of COVID-19, the SEC had suspended all athletics activities through May 31," a statement from the conference read. "June 8 will begin a transition period that will allow student-athletes to gradually adapt to full training and sports activity after this recent period of inactivity. Under plans developed by each university and consistent with state and local health directives, certain activities will be permitted based on the ability to participate in controlled and safe environments, while also maintaining recommended social distancing measures."

Commissioner Greg Sankey added the conference is currently preparing to begin playing fall sports as scheduled, and the limited resumption of voluntary athletic activities is a vital step toward that goal.
