Infantino wants to expand Women's World Cup to 32 teams

Gianni Infantino wants to capitalize on the success of the 2019 Women's World Cup by increasing the size of the 24-team competition.

After calling this summer's tournament the "best Women's World Cup ever," the FIFA president said Friday that he wants the 2023 edition to feature eight additional teams, while also vowing to double the prize money.

Ahead of Sunday's final between the United States and the Netherlands, Infantino said he'd present his proposal to the FIFA council for approval.

"I want to expand the tournament to 32 teams," he stated during a press conference, according to Christian Radnedge of Reuters.

"We will have to act quickly to decide if we are to increase it for 2023. If we do we should reopen the bidding process to allow everyone to have a chance or maybe co-host. Nothing is impossible."

A host nation for the 2023 World Cup has not yet been chosen.

Potential expansion of the Women's World Cup would mirror plans that Infantino's already implemented for the men's equivalent. The 2026 tournament, which is being co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, will feature 48 teams for the first time ever.

Infantino had pushed to supersize the 2022 men's tournament as well, but FIFA, after much deliberation, scrapped that idea in May.

Meanwhile, the Swiss-Italian also championed the idea of a Club World Cup for the women's game, and wants to see such a tournament begin within the next two years to help clubs and players "really shine in a world stage."

FIFA will increase its investment in women's football to $1 billion worldwide over the next four-year cycle, Infantino added.
