No. 15 seed Madison Keys upset No. 4 seed Elina Svitolina in fourth-round action at the US Open on Monday, taking down the Ukrainian 7-6 (2), 1-6, 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

After besting Svitolina in a first set that went to a tiebreaker, Keys seemed to lose steam in the second, making 12 unforced errors and having her serve broken twice.

After going down 2-4 in the final set, Keys dug deep and overcame her 17 unforced errors to complete the four-game comeback, sealing the match victory. Overall, Keys won 98 total points to Svitolina's 97, a testament to the closeness of the contest.

The victory set up a Wednesday bout between Keys and No. 418-ranked Kaia Kanepi of Estonia. Kenepi became the first qualifier to reach the quarterfinals of the US Open since Barbara Gerken in 1981.

"I feel like any time she's on the court, she seems to be doing really well," Keys said of Kenepi post-match. "Obviously she's had a great tournament, so I'm just going to have to get ready for that one now."

Kanepi beat Keys in straight sets in their lone career meeting, a first-round bout at the 2015 Mutua Madrid Open. Their next battle will be Keys' first appearance in a Grand Slam quarterfinal since reaching that high watermark at Wimbledon in 2015.
