Dominant Serena needs just 44 minutes to secure semifinal spot
Serena Williams' quest for a record-tying 24th Grand Slam title continues unabated.
The six-time US Open champion emphatically punched her ticket to the semifinals of this year's tournament, crushing Qiang Wang 6-1, 6-0 on Tuesday at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The match lasted just 44 minutes and gave Williams a 100th career win in her home Grand Slam.
Williams, the No. 8 seed, was in complete control from the opening point, consistently hitting the ball cleanly while firing 25 winners on the night. Wang, who upset world No. 2 Ashleigh Barty to reach her first major quarterfinal, was simply overmatched; the 27-year-old didn't hit a single winner in the contest.
Williams will now meet Elina Svitolina for a berth in the final after the fifth-seeded Ukrainian beat Johanna Konta earlier in the day.
