Messi: Corrupt Copa America is set up for Brazil to win

Argentina star Lionel Messi didn't pull any punches when assessing his displeasure with the quality of officiating at the 2019 Copa America.

A visibly angry Messi accused South America's international showpiece of "corruption" after receiving a red card in the first half of Saturday's third-place match for his altercation with Chile's Gary Medel.

"I did not go to the podium because we should not be part of this corruption and this lack of respect," Messi admitted post-match, according to ESPN FC. "We were ready for more, they did not let us get to the final. Corruption and referees do not allow people to enjoy football and it ruined a little bit."

La Albiceleste lost a semifinal clash with Brazil after two penalty claims in Argentina's favor were denied. Asked if his straight red Saturday was a likely result of his criticism of that result, Messi said, "Yes, unfortunately, yes. You cannot be honest and you cannot say how things should be done."

Host Brazil faces underdog Peru in Sunday's final, and according to Messi, match officials are backing the local favorites for the clash in Rio.

"I think there is no doubt. Unfortunately, I think it is prepared for Brazil (to win Copa America). I hope that the VAR and the referees have nothing to do and that Peru can compete because they have the team to win, but I see it difficult," Messi added.

Messi's red card means the Barcelona talisman now faces suspension for Argentina's opening World Cup qualifier in March. The 32-year-old may now also merit an additional ban for his post-match remarks.

"They can do whatever they want. The truth must be said," Messi continued. "I leave calmly and with the head high and proud of this group that gave everything and that was growing through the tournament."
