But a glaring example of his inexperience came during an Oct. 28 loss to the Denver Nuggets when he opted against calling a late timeout. The Raptors also owned the NBA's second-worst net clutch rating last season (minus-16.3), which can indicate that the players either didn't respond to the coach, just weren't good enough, or both. Even if Williamson returns to his All-Star-caliber self after injuries cost him 52 games in 2024-25, it's hard to fathom New Orleans threatening for a postseason berth in what forecasts to be a bloodbath of a Western Conference.</p><p>Last campaign marked a step back for Green after three years of modest improvements, and this upcoming season could be a decisive one. The additions of Jalen McDaniels, Kevon Looney, Jordan Poole, and Saddiq Bey have sparked a roster overhaul. Head of basketball operations Joe Dumars' decision to move up 10 spots in the draft to select Derik Queen in exchange for Asa Newell and an unprotected first-round pick looked misguided on the surface. Then, Queen was ruled out long term due to a wrist injury, which worsened matters. The Blazers are 117-211 in that span, with last campaign's 36-46 record - spurred by a respectable second-half surge - marking Billups' best year. To his credit, the organization hired him to take a Damian Lillard-led team to the next level, not to be a part of a roster reconstruction. For a first-time head coach, Billups has done a respectable job.</p><p>An injured Lillard has returned to a young Portland squad with a coach noted for his prowess in player development. Billups is also viewed as a strong defensive orchestrator. However, there are questions about his ability to develop offensive schemes that aren't reliant on isolations and dribble handoffs, which seems inconsistent with his reputation as a facilitating Hall of Fame point guard. Still, Billups' .357 winning percentage is sixth-worst in NBA history for coaches with 300 or more games. The Philadelphia 76ers' star duo appeared in just 18 games together in 2024-25. As a result, the team slumped to a dire 24-58 record in Nurse's second season in Philly. That's not his fault, nor was Jared McCain's knee injury that ruled out the former Rookie of the Year front-runner for the final 59 contests. The Sixers and their $190-million payroll can't afford to have another lost campaign. While it might not necessarily be Nurse's fault, his job could be at risk if they don't take advantage of the depleted East.</p><p>That's not to say that Nurse is infallible and should be absolved from blame because of his pedigree. It's also safe to assume that coaching Tyrese Maxey and a collection of G League-level players isn't what drew him to Philadelphia in the first place. Even with the injuries to Embiid and George, the 76ers had the league's fourth-worst defensive rating (117.5) and the seventh-worst offensive mark (105.6) last season. Except for a four-game winning streak over the holidays, the team underperformed compared to expectations, the half-court offense was a chore to watch, and the vibes were abysmal. Although it was a minor miracle that he managed to survive a 2-8 start to last season, patience was afforded to the veteran bench boss as Jon Horst and the Milwaukee Bucks front office waited to see how Giannis Antetokounmpo and Lillard would work together. The Bucks then won 24 of their next 32 games, and things were rosy in Milwaukee. But it was all a facade. Eventually, the pitfalls of a poorly built and imbalanced roster, along with Lillard tearing his Achilles, resulted in another embarrassing first-round defeat to the Indiana Pacers.</p><p>Rivers cannot afford to endure another slow start. If Antetokounmpo already has one foot out the door, Horst will not hesitate to excommunicate Rivers in hopes of currying favor with the franchise cornerstone. Here's the thing: the roster is still poor, and Myles Turner's addition won't undo years of mismanagement, especially when Rivers continues to struggle with in-game adjustments and rotations. The Bucks also don't control their first-round draft position until 2031, making roster upgrades a challenging task. It's hard to see this ending well for Rivers.</p><p><strong>Thermometer:</strong> 🔥🔥🔥🔥</p>

(AP) — Brandon Lowe hit his 30th home run of the season and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Boston Red Sox 7-3 Sunday night to avoid a series sweep.</p><p>The Rays (76-80) snapped an eight-game losing streak against Boston. </p><p>Despite the loss, the Red Sox (85-71) maintained their one-game lead in the race for the AL's second wild card as Cleveland and Houston also lost Sunday.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Rays finished with a 41-40 home record at Steinbrenner Field, the spring training home of the Yankees, after <a href="https://apnews.com/article/hurricane-milton-nba-6647165a86aa8ed4acd8c0e16adb29df">Tropicana Field was damaged</a> by Hurricane Milton in October. Tampa Bay, which closes the season with six road games, secured its ninth straight winning record at home.</p><p>Tampa Bay capitalized on rookie Connelly Early’s rough first inning. Chandler Simpson led off with a single, Yandy Diaz and Junior Caminero walked and Christopher Morel followed with a two-run double. Not bad for the first game of the 2025-26 slate.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><h3>Oct. 22: Spurs at Mavericks</h3><p>The first and second selections in the 2025 NBA Draft, Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper, will make their regular-season debuts against each other in a Texas-themed matchup on the campaign's second day. The game should also mark Victor Wembanyama's return from a deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder that forced the French phenom to miss the final 30 contests of the 2024-25 season.</p><h3>Nov. 3: Bucks at Pacers</h3><p>The Milwaukee Bucks pulled out all the stops to keep Giannis Antetokounmpo in town, prying center Myles Turner from the Indiana Pacers despite lacking cap space. They made the move work by stretching the remaining $113 million on Damian Lillard's deal. The Pacers have also eliminated the Bucks in the playoffs two years in a row, adding more context to a matchup that isn't short on narratives.</p><h3>Nov. 26: Timberwolves at Thunder</h3><p>A Western Conference finals rematch was always going to be a must-watch affair, and the Minnesota Timberwolves will have a point to prove after getting crushed in the lopsided five-game series. The game will mark Jalen Green's first time back in Houston, and while many players tend to provide milquetoast remarks when asked about such matchups, Green thrives on these moments - whether he does his talking through his words or his game.</p><h3>Dec. 23: Thunder at Spurs</h3><p>Wembanyama arguably weathered the first humiliating experience of his burgeoning NBA career in a clash with fellow athletic oddity Chet Holmgren in October. The Thunder big man helped limit Wembanyama to a career-worst six points and one made field goal. Barring injuries, this matchup will be their fifth meeting, with the Thunder holding a 3-1 record in the previous four encounters.</p><h3>Dec. 25: Cavaliers at Knicks</h3><p>In a matchup of the presumed two best clubs in the Eastern Conference, the Cleveland Cavaliers travel to MSG to open the Christmas Day slate against a Knicks team desperate to improve on last season's shortcomings. The matchup is also the only one on the festive day to feature squads from the East, further establishing how wide open the conference could be.</p><h3>Jan. 2: Hawks at Knicks</h3><p>Rivalries are a necessity for a regular season dulled by key absentees and apathetic efforts from teams chasing lottery odds. Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks return to Madison Square Garden to face the New York Knicks on Jan. 2, renewing one of the league's best grudges. MSG loves a villain, and Young is happy to comply. He's averaged 25.6 points and 9.8 assists in 24 career games at MSG to pair with antagonizing antics that have riled up the crowd.</p><h3>Jan. 24: Lakers at Mavericks</h3><p>In the second of four meetings between the two teams, Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic returns to Dallas for a second time since the stunning trade. Carrington was averaging 10.4 points and a career-high 5.1 rebounds in 20 games with the Wings.</p><p>The Baylor product spent the first four seasons of her WNBA career with the Connecticut Sun, earning the Most Improved Player award and a All-Defensive first team nod in 2024.</p><p>Miller, the No. 2 overall selection in the 2023 draft, was with the Lynx for two-plus seasons, averaging 7.1 points per game. Samuelson joined Minnesota in an April and recorded 3.3 points in 14.3 minutes per game for the Lynx.</p><p>Samuelson hasn't played since June 29 because following surgery on her left foot.</p><p>The Lynx lead the league with a 24-5 record on the heels of Saturday's 53-point victory over the Las Vegas Aces.</p>

<p>The Los Angeles Lakers and five-time All-Star <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/68198" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/68198">Luke Doncic</a> agreed to a three-year, $165-million extension, his agent told <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1951679311221825853">ESPN's Shams Charania</a>.</p><p>The agreement includes a player option for the 2028-29 campaign, Charania adds.</p><p>"Luka is one of the game's most transcendent players, and his on-court dominance and passion is without compare," Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka said in a statement.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"Above all else, Luka will lead our franchise to pursue future championships, a goal that will forever define the Lakers."</p><p>Doncic was eligible to ink an extension with the Lakers on Aug. 2 ahead of his first full campaign with the club following an in-season trade from the Dallas Mavericks. His 50 appearances between Dallas and L.A. marked his fewest in any campaign of his seven-year NBA career, with a calf injury sidelining him for 22 straight contests.</p><p>"This is an amazing organization, and I truly believe in what we're building together. "Honestly, I didn't know what to expect those first four or five years. Then I said, 'I need to do this.'"</p><p>Entering his eighth season, Doncic added that he hasn't felt this good in years, saying: "My sleeping, my body, my everything ... A player who makes a shot while in contact with one of the four areas will receive four points. Ionescu, reigning MVP A'ja Wilson, and Phoenix Mercury star Satou Sabally round out Team Clark's starting five.
