Report: Spurs appeal Son's red card for ankle-breaking tackle on Gomes

Tottenham have appealed the red card shown to Heung-min Son during Sunday's 1-1 draw with Everton at Goodison Park, BBC Sport's Simon Stone reports.

Son was sent off after his tackle from behind on Toffees midfielder Andre Gomes fractured the Portuguese international's right ankle. Initially, Son was shown a yellow by match official Martin Atkinson, but it was upgraded to red based on the severity of the injury.

The Premier League explained the decision post-match, saying: "The red card for Son was for endangering the safety of a player, which happened as a consequence of his initial challenge."

Replays appear to show that Gomes suffered the horrific injury after Son slid in from behind but before colliding with Spurs full-back Serge Aurier.

Gomes laid on the pitch writhing in pain as medics and players rushed to his aid. Son was seen crying following the incident.

Everton confirmed Gomes underwent successful surgery on the ankle Monday.

Should Spurs not win the appeal, Son will serve a three-match ban that rules him out for upcoming matches against Sheffield United, West Ham, and Bournemouth.
