The Chicago White Sox offered Manny Machado an 8-year, $250-million contract with incentives and vesting options that could raise its total value to $350 million, sources told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

The offer would have given Machado a higher AAV than he would receive in the 10-year, $300-million deal he reportedly reached Tuesday with the San Diego Padres. But Machado's priority was guaranteed money, according to Rosenthal.

Ken Williams, the executive vice president of the White Sox, said he believed his team was still very much in the running for the infielder's services and thought the team would reach a deal with Machado as early as Tuesday, according to Scott Merkin of MLB.com.

"We all in that clubhouse talked about it this morning," Williams said. "We felt like we actually potentially could close a deal today with him."

He added: "It is disappointing. I'd be lying to you if I said anything other than that."

Williams told reporters the team ultimately wasn't willing to hit the $300-million mark.

"That level wasn't feasible to us because we still have to project putting together a total winning roster and keeping the young players that will ultimately earn into greater dollars themselves," he said.

The White Sox executive also alluded to Chicago's reported offer and implied Machado potentially left money on the table by joining the Padres.

"We thought we were the high offer on the table and we still feel if the reports are accurate, we still feel that there was more potential for him to make more here then that reported deal," he said.

In addition to the White Sox, the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies were also believed to be after the four-time All-Star. The Yankees, however, never made a formal offer, according to reports.
