Major League Baseball has placed New York Yankees right-hander Domingo German on administrative leave under the joint MLB-MLBPA domestic violence policy, according to a release obtained by Lindsey Adler of The Athletic.

German, 27, was also placed on the restricted list, the club announced Thursday.

An official from the commissioner's office witnessed German slap his girlfriend during an argument in a public setting at some point between late Monday night and early Tuesday morning, a source told Bob Klapisch of The New York Times. However, there are now conflicting reports, as sources told Adler that the incident actually took place at German's home, and was not witnessed by any MLB officials.

There's no police report regarding German, sources also told Adler. The alleged incident was reported directly to the league Tuesday and a preliminary investigation was expedited.

Barring an extension, the initial period for the leave may last up to seven days, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

"We fully support all measures being undertaken by the commissioner's office pursuant to the policy on domestic violence," the Yankees wrote in a statement released shortly after the news broke. "We support this policy which reinforces that domestic violence has no place in our society and cannot be tolerated. We have followed the lead of Major League Baseball and will continue to provide our complete cooperation throughout the investigation process.

"We reserve any further comment until the investigation reaches its conclusion. All questions pertaining to this matter should be directed to the office of the commissioner."

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Thursday the team will make plans for their postseason roster that do not include the pitcher, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.

German is 18-4 on the season with a 4.03 ERA in 143 innings (24 starts).

New York signed right-hander Michael King to a major-league contract and selected him to take German's spot on the 25-man roster.
