The Baltimore Orioles have placed infielder Jonathan Villar on waivers, according to Roch Kubatko of MASN.

Villar is still on Baltimore's 40-man roster. However, the club has requested outright waivers, meaning any team can pick up his arbitration-eligible contract, according to Dan Connolly of The Athletic.

The Orioles were trying to trade Villar before Monday's non-tender deadline but were unsuccessful, a source told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

If nobody claims Villar by Monday, Baltimore will attempt to work out a new deal with him to avoid arbitration, or he'll be non-tendered and become a free agent.

Villar is projected to make $10.4 million in 2020 and is currently scheduled to hit free agency in 2021.

The 28-year-old is coming off arguably his best season in the majors. He hit 24 home runs with 40 stolen bases while accruing a 4.0 WAR for Baltimore in 2019, according to FanGraphs.
