Mets' Cano lands on IL with adductor strain, no timetable for return

Robinson Cano's disastrous New York Mets tenure took another turn for the worse Tuesday.

The Mets have placed the former All-Star on the 10-day injured list with a Grade 2 adductor strain, the team announced, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

Cano underwent an MRI after leaving Monday's game against the Atlanta Braves early due to groin tightness. It's unclear how much time he'll miss.

New York activated outfielder Billy Hamilton in a corresponding roster move prior to Tuesday's game against the Washington Nationals, according to DiComo. The Mets acquired Hamilton from the San Francisco Giants this past weekend.

The strain is the latest setback in Cano's tumultuous Mets career. The 37-year-old has rarely resembled the player who was once one of baseball's best second basemen since joining New York in a blockbuster trade in 2018, and he's struggled to stay on the field. He missed a large amount of time due to quadriceps and hamstring issues last year while putting up one of his worst statistical seasons.

Cano, who is owed more than $48 million over the final two years of his contract, was off to a hot start in 2020. He slashed .412/.462/.559 with a home run, seven RBIs, and four walks before getting hurt.

Cano's injury is yet another blow to a Mets infield that's been riddled with injuries all year. Jed Lowrie hasn't played yet due to a recurring knee issue, while replacement Eduardo Nunez is also on the IL after suffering a knee injury early in the season.

Shortstop Amed Rosario and third baseman Jeff McNeil are considered day-to-day after both were hurt during Monday's game, according to Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News.
