White Sox, Renteria agree to part ways
The Chicago White Sox and manager Rick Renteria have agreed to part ways following the 2020 season, the team announced Monday.
"This is obviously not an easy decision for any of the parties involved," White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said, according to Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times. "You will not hear me share anything negative about Rick Renteria."
Chicago tied for second place in the AL Central under Renteria's guidance this season. The White Sox were eliminated in the wild-card round by the Oakland Athletics.
Renteria replaced Robin Ventura as manager on Oct. 3, 2016, and amassed a 236-309 record during his time in the position. Renteria also managed the Chicago Cubs for one season in 2014, posting a 73-89 record.
Pitching coach Don Cooper was also fired, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports.
The status of the remaining coaching staff will be determined at a later date in consultation with the team's next manager, the White Sox added.
"The ideal candidate will be someone who has experience in a championship organization in recent years," Hahn said.
Former White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen won't be among the candidates considered, Hahn said.
