The Milwaukee Brewers are thinking big ahead of the trade deadline.

Milwaukee has checked in with the Minnesota Twins regarding third baseman Josh Donaldson and with the Colorado Rockies about shortstop Trevor Story, reports Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

Donaldson's hefty contract seemingly makes him a long shot for Milwaukee ahead of the trade deadline, according to Heyman. The Brewers own one of the league's smaller payrolls at a little over $93 million, ranking 19th in baseball, according to Spotrac.

The former AL MVP is in the second season of a four-year, $92-million contract and earns $21 million annually. His deal also comes with a $16-million club option in 2024.

Donaldson is hitting .249/.352/.475 with 15 home runs and 42 RBIs across 80 games in 2021. He has dealt with some injuries this season, including calf issues that have plagued him for the last several years.

The New York Mets have also reportedly shown interest in Donaldson.

Story, meanwhile, is a pending free agent and appears unlikely to re-sign in Colorado. The 28-year-old owns a .242/.313/.425 slash line with 12 homers, 46 RBIs, and 17 stolen bases in 85 games.

Milwaukee has already added one shortstop this season, having traded for Willy Adames in May.

Multiple other teams are reportedly showing interest in Story, including the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox.

The NL Central-leading Brewers have struggled offensively this year. Just three of their position players have double-digit home-run totals, and their 90 wRC+ is tied for 20th out of 30 teams. They have an immediate need at third base, as Travis Shaw was one of their weakest hitters before suffering a shoulder injury in June.
