Indians trade Cesar Hernandez to White Sox
The Chicago White Sox acquired second baseman Cesar Hernandez from the Cleveland Indians for left-hander Konnor Pilkington on Thursday, the team announced.
Hernandez hit .231/.307/.431 with 18 home runs, 17 doubles, and 47 RBIs in 96 games for the Indians this season. He should slot in as Chicago's starting second baseman.
The 31-year-old owns a career .272/.347/.388 slash line with 67 homers, 150 doubles, and 320 RBIs across nine seasons with the Indians and the Philadelphia Phillies.
Hernandez is eligible for free agency at season's end and is owed the remainder of his $6-million salary for 2021.
The White Sox released right-hander Tyler Johnson to make room for Hernandez on the 40-man roster.
Pilkington, 23, owns a 4-4 record with a 3.48 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 62 innings for Double-A Birmingham this season. Chicago selected the Mississippi State product in the third round of the 2018 draft.
The White Sox entered Thursday with an 8 1/2-game lead over Cleveland for first in the AL Central.
