Mariners promote, extend Dipoto; Servais agrees to multi-year deal

The Seattle Mariners promoted Jerry Dipoto to president of baseball operations and gave the longtime general manager a multi-year extension, the club announced Wednesday.

"Jerry is a creative, passionate leader with a clear vision for our franchise," chairman and managing partner John Stanton said in a statement. "Following the 2018 season, Jerry came to us with a plan for how to compete for and win championships. He was transparent on the difficulty, but also clear on the goals and milestones."

The Mariners and manager Scott Servais also agreed to a multi-year contract.

Dipoto and Servais are in their sixth seasons with Seattle. The latter is the second-winningest skipper in franchise history with a 419-422 record.

"Scott has done a terrific job in defining our team's culture as one that is driven by process, hard work, and heart," Dipoto said.

The Mariners (71-62) entered Wednesday's action 3 1/2 games out of a wild-card spot in the American League.
