Cano honored by Padres opportunity: 'I know I still can play this game'

Robinson Cano is excited about the opportunity to join the San Diego Padres, and even though his role is going to change dramatically, the veteran believes he has plenty to offer his new team.

"I still got a lot left in the tank," the 39-year-old said on Friday, according to The Athletic's Maria Torres, "and I know I still can play this game."

The Padres inked Cano to a major-league contract - he'll receive the league minimum in salary - after the New York Mets released him on May 8 with two years left on his contract.

San Diego doesn't expect the same kind of production that made Cano an eight-time All-Star and five-time Silver Slugger. Instead, the Padres intend to use him off their bench while hoping he provides guidance and clubhouse leadership.

Cano admitted he isn't fully ready for the switch to a less-prominent role, but he plans to adjust.

"The mentality is already switched. It's just going to take time no matter what," Cano said. "It's like, you've been doing the (everyday) role for the last 15, 16, 17 years. It's just a role that's going to take time (to adjust to) regardless that you have your mindset ready."

Cano hit .195/.233/.268 with one home run and three RBIs in 43 plate appearances for the Mets before he was released.
