St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright will start the season on the injured list and miss the next several weeks due to a groin strain, manager Oliver Marmol said Thursday, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Marmol added that Wainwright, who was supposed to start on Opening Day against the Toronto Blue Jays, sustained the injury while working out in the weight room at Miami's LoanDepot Park on Tuesday before the WBC final.

Wainwright plans to retire after the 2023 campaign. He's played his entire 17-year career with the Cardinals.

The 41-year-old posted a 3.71 ERA with 143 strikeouts over 191 2/3 innings (32 starts) last season.
