Chapman, Hader, Bellinger among 7 players to receive qualifying offer
Seven players received a qualifying offer prior to Monday's 5 p.m. ET deadline.
Players have until 4 p.m. on Nov. 14 to decide to accept the one-year, $20.325-million deal or decline it in order to remain a free agent.
Player | Position | Team | 2023 Salary |
---|---|---|---|
Shohei Ohtani | SP/DH | Angels | $30.0M |
Cody Bellinger | OF | Cubs | $12.5M |
Matt Chapman | 3B | Blue Jays | $12.5M |
Josh Hader | RP | Padres | $14.1M |
Blake Snell | SP | Padres | $16.6M |
Aaron Nola | SP | Phillies | $16.0M |
Sonny Gray | SP | Twins | $12.7M |
Players can still sign with the team that extended them a qualifying offer even if it's rejected. If a team gives a qualifying offer to a player who signs elsewhere, the player's former club receives draft-pick compensation in 2024. Teams that sign any player attached to a qualifying offer will be forced to surrender a draft pick as compensation. The draft pick is determined by a number of factors, including the value of the contract signed, if the signing team exceeded the CBT in 2023, and if the teams receive revenue sharing.
Only 13 of the 124 players to ever receive a qualifying offer have accepted. Players are only eligible to receive a qualifying offer once in their career. Players that were traded at any point during the 2023 season weren't eligible to receive one.
