Report: Twins, Padres discussing trade involving catcher Vázquez
The San Diego Padres and Minnesota Twins have been two of the least active teams this offseason, but that could change soon.
The Padres and Twins have spoken about a trade involving catcher Christian Vázquez, sources told The Athletic's Dan Hayes and Dennis Lin.
A deal isn't imminent, but both teams appear to be motivated to continue discussions, according to Hayes and Lin.
Vázquez would provide the Padres with much-needed help behind the dish. San Diego's catching depth includes Luis Campusano, Brett Sullivan, and Martín Maldonado.
2024 stats
PLAYER | GP | OPS | fWAR |
---|---|---|---|
Christian Vázquez | 93 | .575 | 0.8 |
Luis Campusano | 91 | .642 | -0.5 |
Brett Sullivan | 7 | .610 | -0.1 |
Martín Maldonado | 48 | .403 | -1.5 |
The 34-year-old Vázquez is a 10-year veteran who's in the final year of a three-year deal he signed with the Twins before the 2023 campaign. He's set to earn $10 million this season.
The Twins are also reportedly among the teams interested in Padres right-hander Dylan Cease, who rival executives believe will be traded by San Diego to free up payroll, sources told Hayes and Lin.
