The Houston Astros and shortstop Jeremy Peña were engaged in serious long-term extension talks before he recently switched agents to Scott Boras, reports the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

The discussions are now on hold but centered around a five-year deal exceeding $105 million, sources told KPRC 2's Ari Alexander.

Peña is amid a career year, slashing .326/.380/.493 with 11 home runs, 40 RBIs, 15 steals, and seven defensive runs saved for the division-leading Astros.

The 27-year-old ranks fourth in the majors in fWAR (4.0) behind Aaron Judge, Cal Raleigh, and Pete Crow-Armstrong.

Peña has been a fixture at shortstop for the Astros since 2022 after Carlos Correa departed in free agency.

He's earning $4.1 million this season and is arbitration-eligible for the first time in 2026 before becoming a free agent in 2028.
