Pirates trade Gold Glover Hayes to Reds
The Pittsburgh Pirates traded third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes to the Cincinnati Reds for shortstop prospect Sammy Stafura, left-hander Taylor Rogers, and cash considerations, the teams announced Wednesday.
Hayes is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in baseball. The 28-year-old has recorded 91 defensive runs saved for the Pirates since debuting in 2020. He also won a NL Gold Glove in 2023 and is the front-runner to claim the award again this season.
At the plate, Hayes is slashing .236/.279/.290 with 36 RBIs in 100 games during the 2025 campaign. He owns a .676 OPS across six big-league seasons, with his best year coming in 2023 when he hit .271 with 15 homers.
The Texan signed an eight-year, $70-million extension with the Pirates in April 2022. His contract also includes a $12-million club option for 2030 with a $6-million buyout.
Stafura was the Reds' No. 9 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. The 20-year-old was a second-round draft choice in 2023. He slashed .262/.393/.411 with 48 RBIs and 28 steals in 88 games at Single-A.
The 34-year-old Rogers is in his 10th big-league season. The southpaw owns a 2.45 ERA and 9.3 K/9 in 40 appearances this campaign.
