Giants' Verlander intends to pitch in 2026
San Francisco Giants right-hander Justin Verlander wants to pitch in 2026, and believes his recent turnaround will show teams he's worthy of a contract next season.
"I would hope somebody would offer me a contract now," Verlander told USA Today's Bob Nightengale.
The 42-year-old pitched well against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday, tossing seven shutout innings during the Giants' 5-1 victory.
Verlander's allowed one earned run over his last four outings and lowered his ERA to 3.75. It's been a significant change for the 20-year veteran, who was 0-7 with a 4.70 ERA during the first half.
The three-time Cy Young winner credits an adjustment he made during a bullpen session for his improved results.
"Every day you come to the field for four months, and it's like, what's the way out of this?" Verlander said. "How do I make the adjustment? What do I need to do? What's wrong? Because clearly something's wrong. I just have to try to find it. I had a new thought in the bullpen, I took that into the game, and the game results have been what you see.
"So, I'm glad I didn't give up."
Verlander signed a one-year, $15-million deal with the Giants in January. If he were to sign a deal next season, he'd be the oldest active player in the league.
