Holloway KOs Gaethje in final second to win BMF belt

It was only fitting that Max Holloway was crowned the new BMF champion - the baddest motherf----r in the UFC - after scoring one of the craziest knockouts of all time.

Holloway, the former featherweight champion who moved up to the lightweight division Saturday night, knocked out Justin Gaethje with one second left to capture the BMF title at UFC 300 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Holloway was winning on two of three judges' scorecards entering the fifth round and could have coasted to the end of the fight. Instead, he wanted to end it with a bang. With 10 seconds left, Holloway pointed at the ground - paying homage to the iconic finish of his 2016 bout against Ricardo Lamas - and began slugging it out with Gaethje in a wild finishing sequence. Both men landed punches but Holloway blasted Gaethje with a massive right hand that put the former interim lightweight champion to sleep.

After the win, Holloway said he wants to go back down in weight and challenge UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria next. Holloway also expressed interest in a future matchup with lightweight champ Islam Makhachev.

Holloway stayed busier than Gaethje throughout most of the bout, fighting tactically and picking his opponent apart. Holloway landed a spinning kick at the end of the first round that hit and seemed to injure Gaethje's nose. Holloway landed hard punches all fight and outlanded Gaethje 181-103 in significant strikes.

Gaethje dropped Holloway with a right hand in the fourth round, but Holloway survived.

With the win, Holloway's won three in a row. He was coming off a knockout win over Chan Sung Jung in a featherweight bout last August at UFC Singapore.

Gaethje was riding a two-fight winning streak coming in. "The Highlight" captured the vacant BMF belt with a knockout victory over Dustin Poirier in the UFC 291 main event last July.
