Cavs hire 14-year vet Calderon as special advisor

The Cleveland Cavaliers hired 14-year NBA veteran Jose Calderon as a special advisor to the front office, president of basketball operations Koby Altman announced Friday.

"We are thrilled to add someone of Jose Calderon's background and experience to our front office," Altman said in a statement. "His accomplishments as a basketball player and familiarity with our organization will be invaluable.

"We look forward to his insights and perspective on how we can continue moving this team forward and enhancing our efforts toward sustainable and long-term success here in Cleveland."

Calderon spent most of his career with the Toronto Raptors, averaging 10 points and 7.2 assists over eight seasons. He trails only Kyle Lowry on the club's all-time list for assists.

The 40-year-old was a member of the Cavs' Eastern Conference championship team in 2017-18. He averaged 4.5 points and started 32 games for the club that season.

Calderon also enjoyed great success on the international stage. He was on Spain's world championship-winning squad in 2006 and captured three Olympic medals.

Calderon joined the National Basketball Players Association after his playing days, serving as a special assistant to the executive director during the 2019-20 campaign.
