<p>Geno Auriemma continues to rewrite the record books.</p><p>UConn's 85-41<strong> </strong>rout of Fairleigh Dickinson gave the Huskies icon his 1,217th career victory, surpassing Tara VanDerveer as college basketball's all-time winningest coach.</p><p>Auriemma's journey to the summit has been 40 years in the making. UConn had only one winning season in 11 years when the future Hall of Famer took the job. However, the program had yet to win a single contest in two previous trips to the Big Dance.</p><p>The Huskies finally broke through on the national stage in the 1991 NCAA Tournament, escaping their opening tilt against Toledo with a narrow 81-80 victory at Gampel Pavilion. All-American forward Kerry Bascom - Auriemma's first major coup on the recruiting trail - delivered with a tourney single-game school-record 39 points, including a go-ahead 3-point play with 19 seconds remaining.</p><p>Auriemma's squad went on to reach its maiden Final Four, where UConn would lose 61-55 to No. 1 seed Virginia. While the Huskies fell short of the ultimate prize, their deep March run established belief in Auriemma's vision and opened the door to a whole wave of highly touted recruits.</p><p>"That night here against Toledo changed Connecticut basketball forever," Auriemma told reporters in 2013, including <a href="https://www.ctpost.com/uconn/article/Auriemma-recalls-UConn-s-first-breakthrough-4389689.php">Rich Elliott of The Connecticut Post</a>. "That's the night that we became the kind of program that can go to the Final Four. Still, the Huskies were poised to contend for the 1995 title as Nykesha Sales joined a talented roster that featured Lobo, Jennifer Rizzotti, and Kara Wolters.</p><p>UConn was a perfect 12-0 heading into its inaugural meeting with powerhouse Tennessee. Their showdown would determine the No. 1 spot in the AP poll and was broadcast on national television, which was a rarity for women's basketball at the time. The Huskies defeated the Lady Vols 77-66 in front of a sold-out home crowd and seized the top spot in the polls for the first time in school history.</p><p>The hotly contested matchup sparked arguably the greatest rivalry in women's basketball and elevated the sport's profile. UConn was hardly threatened during its 93-62 victory over the Seminoles, just like virtually every other game during its unprecedented win streak. Their lopsided 82-51 victory over Syracuse in the title game made UConn the first Division I women's basketball team to win four straight national championships. Not even Pat Summitt's storied Tennessee teams accomplished the feat.</p><p>Breanna Stewart, Moriah Jefferson, and Morgan Tuck also became the only players in college hoops history to four-peat. The star trio ended its decorated run with a 151-5 mark, which is the most victories by any group of college basketball players.</p><p>Auriemma claimed his 11th national championship to break a tie with Wooden for the all-time lead. The Huskies had to turn the page on their earliest tourney exit in nearly 20 years and navigate through a litany of injuries in perhaps the most challenging campaign of Auriemma's career.</p><p>UConn lost six players to season-ending ailments - including former No. 1 recruit Azzi Fudd - and was forced to operate with a seven-player rotation for most of the season. Auriemma adjusted on the fly with a four-guard lineup to maximize the offensive strengths of the available players. It was unconventional and unlike his preferred way of playing, but it got the job done.</p><p>UConn entered its Elite Eight encounter against JuJu Watkins and 1-seed USC in an unfamiliar position as the underdog. That didn't matter once the game tipped off as Auriemma's defensive game plan against the Trojans star reaffirmed why he remains one of the best in the business.</p><p>The eight-time Naismith Coach of the Year had Watkins constantly under pressure. Auriemma deployed defensive ace Nika Muhl and Paige Bueckers as Watkins' primary defenders. He sent double teams whenever Watkins caught the ball atop the key, limiting the freshman phenom's opportunities to attack the paint and expose the Huskies' lack of interior size. Auriemma's schemes resulted in a 9-of-25 shooting performance and four turnovers from Watkins. By the time she got going in the fourth quarter, it was too late for USC to mount a comeback.</p>

The 14-time All-Star was eligible to receive a one-year, $60-million contract extension this past summer, but the two sides could also agree to a two-year, $120-million maximum extension after the 2024-25 season.</p><p>Durant was off to a strong start before being <a href="https://www.thescore.com/nba/news/3123613/kd-out-at-least-2-weeks-with-calf-strain">sidelined with a left calf strain</a>, averaging 27.6 points, 6.6 boards, 3.4 assists, and 1.4 blocks across nine appearances. He was shooting 42.9% from deep and 55.3% overall.</p><p>Phoenix has dropped five of six games during Durant's absence. The Suns sit sixth in the West with a 9-6 record entering Wednesday's slate of games.</p>

Her playmaking ability will allow Arike Ogunbowale to play off the ball and should provide an incentive for Natasha Howard and Satou Sabally to stay put in Dallas. However, adding Iriafen solidifies a young frontcourt trio that the club can build around for years to come. The USC product is coming off a breakout junior year, averaging 19.4 points, 11 rebounds, and 2.3 assists en route to earning the Katrina McClain Award as the nation's top power forward. Iriafen already has chemistry with Cameron Brink, having previously played alongside the Sparks forward at Stanford for three seasons.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><iframe title="3. The Sky are set in the frontcourt after investing last year's first-round picks on Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, so look for them to target a guard. Miles' talent would be difficult to pass up. The New Jersey native was one of the NCAA's top facilitators before tearing her ACL in Notre Dame's 2022-23 regular-season finale. Miles appears to be back in All-American form early in her return and has shown a much improved 3-point stroke.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><iframe title="4. Morrow is a force in the post and has consistently been among the country's best on the glass from her time at DePaul to her current stop at LSU. There are concerns about the 6-foot-1 forward's size and lack of shooting range. But the same worries existed about Reese last season, and she was just fine.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><iframe title="5. Citron is a versatile player who could fill all sorts of roles depending on the Valkyries' roster construction. The 6-foot-1 guard can finish through contact in the paint, defends one through three, and is an elite rebounder for her position. You can never have enough floor spacing, and Citron fits the bill as a career 36.2% 3-point shooter.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><iframe title="6. The 5-foot-11 guard arrived in Storrs with much fanfare as a top-ranked recruit and McDonald's All-American. She's flashed her shooting prowess as a pull-up threat in the midrange and knocks down threes off the catch. The biggest question surrounding Fudd is health. She missed all but two games in 2023-24 after tearing her right ACL for the second time. The Liberty have the luxury of taking a swing on Malonga's upside without needing her to play an immediate role. The 6-foot-6 center was the youngest member of France's silver-medal squad at the Paris Olympics. She averaged 11.9 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks last season as a teenager in France's top domestic professional basketball league.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><iframe title="8. The 6-foot-4 forward provides an additional post presence, too, with NaLyssa Smith's future uncertain and veteran Temi Fagbenle entering restricted free agency. The Storm ranked ninth in threes (6.1 per game) and last in 3-point percentage (28.8%). Amoore is one of the better floor-spacing prospects available, having finished second in the NCAA in triples (118) during the 2022-23 campaign. The Kentucky floor general currently leads all players in assists (41). Amoore could give Skylar Diggins-Smith the freedom to play off the ball, and she provides depth at the point following Nika Muhl's recent ACL injury.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><iframe title="10. He finished the first half with 27 points and added another 16 in the second to finish the game with 43. He also put up three assists, two rebounds, one steal, and one block while tying his career high with seven 3-pointers. Thomas is the fifth visiting player ever with multiple 40-plus-point games at Madison Square Garden before turning 24 years old. He dropped 41 points, six assists, and splashed four threes in his previous visit to MSG last season.</p><p><strong>Bam Adebayo (Heat): </strong>Adebayo tallied 30 points, 11 boards, seven assists, and five steals to help the Heat bounce back from a brutal loss in their NBA Cup opener. Adebayo joined LeBron James and Eddie Jones as the only players in franchise history to produce such a stat line, according to <a href="https://x.com/statmuse/status/1857609725849788659">StatMuse</a>. The Kentucky product scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to help Miami pull away from the Pacers.</p><p><strong>De'Aaron Fox (Kings):</strong> Fox went nuclear in the fourth quarter of Sacramento's overtime loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, leading the charge - without DeMar DeRozan and Malik Monk - as the Kings put together a 19-2 run at the beginning of the final frame. The 26-year-old dropped a franchise-record 60 points to help eradicate a 20-point second-half deficit. The last player to score 50 or more in a Kings uniform was DeMarcus Cousins in 2016-17. Fox added seven assists and three steals to his record-breaking performance.</p><h3>Highlight of the night</h3><p>The Knicks and Nets were in a dogfight down the stretch. That's when Jalen Brunson took matters into his own hands, draining the game-winning 3-pointer over former teammate Dorian Finney-Smith. The 34-year-old is shooting 44.4% from the field and 34.8% from deep, which is in line with his efficiency from his first season in Milwaukee.</p><p>The Bucks carry a 2-8 record into Tuesday's game, which marks the first contest of the 2024 NBA In-Season Tournament.</p>

There's also a whole new crop of freshmen chomping at the bit to get going.</p><p>Here are 10 things to watch in the opening month of the college hoops campaign.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><h3>1. UConn starts quest for 3-peat</h3><p>Dan Hurley isn't resting on his laurels despite leading UConn to a second straight national championship last season. The Huskies reloaded in the summer with five-star freshman Liam McNeeley and former Saint Mary's standout Aidan Mahaney joining holdovers Alex Karaban, Hassan Diarra, and Samson Johnson.</p><p>Sophomores Solomon Ball and Jaylin Stewart are also expected to take on bigger roles after playing sparingly during their debut campaign. No school has three-peated since the legendary John Wooden guided UCLA to nine consecutive titles from 1964-73. It'll be an uphill climb for UConn after losing four starters to the NBA, but count Hurley and the Huskies out at your own peril.</p><h3>2. Flagg watch</h3><p>It won't take long for fans to realize why NBA teams are tanking for Cooper Flagg. The 6-foot-9, 205-pound forward turned heads in scrimmages against Team USA over the summer, showcasing a versatile two-way skill set that bodes well for the next level.</p><p>Flagg is a low-post threat, above-the-rim finisher, and possesses the court vision of a guard. On the defensive end, the teenager uses his length on the perimeter to force turnovers and has tremendous shot-blocking instincts. Flagg has also made strides with his jumper, displaying the ability to shoot off the catch and pull up from the mid-range.</p><h3>3. It'll now be on John Calipari to get the Razorbacks over the hump. The Hall of Famer has been busy from the get-go overhauling the team's roster. Calipari brought over a number of players and recruits from Kentucky and surrounded them with some fresh faces through the transfer portal.</p><p>Talent has never been a question with Calipari's squads; it's well-documented how many first-round draft picks he's coached over the years. Can Calipari finally optimize the roster at his disposal and avoid another early March exit?</p><h3>4. Pope returns to Kentucky</h3><p>Few people understand the lofty expectations of Big Blue Nation better than Mark Pope. The new lead man at Kentucky played a pair of seasons for the Wildcats and captained the school to a national championship in 1996. While it's certainly a feel-good story to see Pope return to his alma mater, he's also got the pedigree to bring the program back to the promised land.</p><p>Pope has registered a record of .500 or better in eight of his nine head coaching seasons. At his latest stop at BYU, the Cougars had three top-25 finishes in KenPom's rankings for adjusted offensive efficiency. Pope's teams play a modernized, up-tempo brand of basketball with a heavy emphasis on 3-point shooting. That alone will be refreshing for Kentucky fans after watching Calipari undervalue threes for much of his 15-year tenure.</p><h3>5. Alabama's a basketball school?</h3><p>Nate Oats has taken Alabama's basketball program to new heights since he arrived in 2019. The Crimson Tide have made four straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including their maiden Final Four last season. There's every reason to believe Oats and Co. can make it back, with All-American guard Mark Sears and Grant Nelson returning for their final year of eligibility.</p><p>Alabama also boasts a strong incoming recruiting class - led by five-star forward Derrion Reid - and added Clifford Omoruyi, Chris Youngblood, and Aden Holloway via the transfer portal. The Crimson Tide averaged a nation-leading 90.1 points last season and arguably have even more firepower on their roster.</p><h3>6. Projected top-five draft picks Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper have a lot to do with it. The freshman duo are the highest-ranked commits in Scarlet Knights history and will be leaned on heavily to lead a relatively young group of players.</p><p>Bailey is an elite-sized shotmaking wing with explosive athleticism, while Harper is a natural floor general who operates well out of ball screens and maximizes his height advantage against opposing guards. A lack of depth may ultimately be Rutgers' downfall, but the star frosh should be appointment viewing.</p><h3>7. Big 12 front-runners</h3><p>The Big 12 has been recognized by many as the best conference in college hoops. And for good reason: Two of the past four national champs have come from the Big 12, and five of its teams are ranked in the top 10 of the AP preseason poll.</p><p>No. 1 Kansas returns All-American center Hunter Dickinson, KJ Adams Jr., and Dajuan Harris Jr. The Jayhawks addressed their 3-point shooting woes through the transfer portal with the additions of Rylan Griffen and Zeke Mayo. No. 4 Houston is enjoying its best stretch of basketball since the Phi Slama Jama era. The Cougars have been an elite defensive squad under Kelvin Sampson and brought back four starters from the previous campaign, led by L.J. Cryer.</p><p>Iowa State head coach T.J. Otzelberger is also engineering a turnaround for the fifth-ranked Cyclones on the strength of a stingy defensive unit. No. 8 Baylor has been a model of consistency under Scott Drew. The Bears have one of the NCAA's top freshman (V.J. Edgecombe) and surrounded him with a pair of seasoned vets (Norchad Omier, Jeremy Roach).</p><p>Newcomer Arizona rounds out the list of Big 12 schools in the top 10. High-scoring guard Caleb Love returns for a fifth year, Motiejus Krivas is expected to fill the shoes of Oumar Ballo, and Oakland transfer Trey Townsend should keep Tommy Lloyd's high-octane offense rolling.</p><h3>8. Purdue enters post-Edey era</h3><p>Purdue will have a different look with its main man in the middle - Zach Edey - off to the NBA following back-to-back Wooden Award campaigns. But that doesn't mean the Boilermakers won't be in the hunt for a third consecutive Big Ten regular-season title.</p><p>Braden Smith topped all players in assists (292) last season and should continue to grow alongside backcourt mate Fletcher Loyer. Fellow junior Trey Kaufman-Renn is set for a larger frontcourt role after flashing promise when given extended minutes.</p><p>But it wouldn't be a Matt Painter team without an interior presence, and incoming 7-foot-4 center Daniel Jacobsen fits the bill. The Chicago native starred for USA Basketball this past summer at the FIBA U18 AmeriCup, averaging 9.2 points and posting an American tournament-record 19 blocks.</p><h3>9. Super seniors have had a significant impact in recent years, and that should be no different this season.</p><p>RJ Davis is the lone returning AP first-team All-American. The reigning ACC Player of the Year was the engine of the Tar Heels' high-scoring offense a year ago, and the program will only go as far as he takes it.</p><p>Auburn's firmly in the mix for another SEC crown with Johni Broome back in the fold. The 6-foot-10 forward has always been superb around the basket as both a finisher and rim-protector. He added the 3-point shot to his arsenal last season, which should give Bruce Pearl more lineup flexibility.</p><p>Creighton got its starting big man back as well. Ryan Kalkbrenner has led the Big East in blocks in each of the previous two campaigns. The 7-footer is looking to join Patrick Ewing as the only four-time winners of the Big East Defensive Player of the Year award.</p><h3>10. New faces in new places</h3><p>While continuity is certainly valued, an impact transfer or two is almost a requirement to have success in today's game.</p><p>Oumar Ballo heads to Indiana after spending the last four years with Lloyd at Gonzaga and Arizona. The 7-foot, 260-pound center is a walking double-double, and the shot-creating ability of guards Myles Rice and Kanaan Carlyle should give Ballo a similar opportunity to feast in the paint.</p><p>Johnell Davis burst onto the national scene as a junior during Florida Atlantic's Cinderella run to the Final Four. The versatile guard proved capable of being a high-usage scorer last season and will be leaned on by Calipari during his first year in charge at Arkansas.</p><p>Kadary Richmond opted to stay in the Big East, joining Rick Pitino and St. John's following three campaigns at Seton Hall. At 6-foot-6, he's got a size advantage on most opposing point guards and has a knack for getting into the paint. Even when Richmond's shot isn't falling, he still contributes as a playmaker, rebounder, and defender.</p><p>AJ Storr is taking his talents to Kansas after a breakout sophomore season with Wisconsin. The 6-foot-6 guard tallied a team-high 16.8 points per contest and was an All-Big Ten second-team selection. Storr provides size on the wing, and his scoring ability will help a Jayhawks offense that had far too many dry spells last season.</p>

<p>Sacramento Kings star <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/53733" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/53733">De'Aaron Fox</a> says he's still not at 100% after suffering a dislocated pinkie in the early stages of training camp.</p><p>Fox added that X-rays on his injured shooting hand were negative.</p><p>"(It's) probably a ligament," Fox told <a href="https://www.sacbee.com/sports/nba/sacramento-kings/article294953644.html">Chris Biderman of The Sacramento Bee</a> following Saturday's overtime defeat to the Toronto Raptors.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Fox hasn't missed a game this season and doesn't plan on sitting out anytime soon. The All-Star guard has been playing with his pinkie and ring finger taped together.</p><p>Fox went 0-for-11 from deep and 8-of-22 from the field overall against Toronto. He's shooting a career-worst 26.8% from deep across six appearances.</p><p>However, Fox isn't blaming his early struggles on the injury.</p><p>"I can't say (the injury) is the reason," Fox said. "I've had games where I've shot it well, and I've had games where I haven't. I just got to get used to it."</p>
