Monica Wright Rogers knew she wanted to stay around basketball once her playing career ended.The former No. 2 overall pick dipped her toes in all sorts of hoops jobs shortly after she retired in 2016. She had two separate stints as an assistant coach at the collegiate level, worked in the NBA's league office as its elite basketball women's operations lead, and spent the past two seasons as the Phoenix Mercury's assistant general manager.All of those experiences led Wright Rogers to her true calling - the inaugural general manager of the WNBA's Toronto Tempo.<div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div>"First and foremost, I have a huge passion for women's sports. It's my life, and then obviously basketball has changed my life," Wright Rogers told reporters Thursday, including theScore, at her introductory press conference. "When I was a player and winning at the highest level, I felt that was just something that I wanted ... everyone that came to the WNBA as a player to experience."Wright Rogers added: "The combination of my talents, my passion, my experiences. I'm able to use it and stretch myself on a day-to-day (basis) that I've never felt in any other profession."Tempo president Teresa Resch consulted numerous people around the WNBA throughout the search process to identify the ideal qualities in a candidate. She was told to prioritize an "incredible relationship builder" and someone that will "bring people together."Resch quickly saw those traits in Wright Rogers as they moved through the interview process, while the two-time WNBA champ was drawn to Toronto's opening by Resch's own resume.Resch spent five years at the NBA's head office and was the Toronto Raptors' vice president of basketball operations and player development for nearly a decade before taking charge of the Tempo."Teresa's reputation has always been of hard work, of creativity, of passion for women's sports," Wright Rogers said. "I've heard such great things about her and then you see the product that she's built here already. "I think defense is something that wins championships at the end of the day. So you really can't not have that in your on-court product."Wright Rogers also hopes the Tempo can be a player in the stacked 2026 free-agency class when 21 of last season's WNBA All-Stars are set to become unrestricted free agents. She believes the opportunity for players to leave a lasting mark for a brand new franchise will appeal to prospective free agents."Players will be able to step into this and really paint a picture of how they want this team to be on court, and they'll be the faces of it, not in competition with anyone prior," Wright Rogers said.Wright Rogers' roster construction could feature a few homegrown products down the line. One of her responsibilities with the NBA was to put together the international women's roster for the Basketball Without Borders camps."I think it's given me a little bit of a leg up in terms of scouting and understanding the pipeline for women's basketball athletes here in Canada," Wright Rogers said. "So I think that experience will allow me to tap in early into some of the up-and-coming stars, whether they're here still playing in Canada or in college. The college football national title game is in the rearview and the Super Bowl is done and dusted. Now it's officially college basketball's time to take center stage.The countdown to the NCAA Tournament selection show and the beginning of March Madness is now less than a month away. Here are eight storylines to watch over the next four weeks as the tournament field begins to take shape.<h3>SEC's historic pursuit</h3>The SEC's depth has been touted all season long. The conference boasts five top-seven schools and nine ranked teams in the latest AP poll. Last Saturday's showdown between Auburn and Alabama was the first-ever SEC matchup between the AP's Nos. 1 and 2 teams. The conference had <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3218946" href="https://thescore.com/news/3218946">three</a> No. 1 seeds in the NCAA selection committee's mock bracket, including the top overall seed. Thirteen SEC teams are projected to make this year's NCAA Tournament, according to <a href="https://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/page/bracketology/ncaa-bracketology-2025-march-madness-men-field-predictions">ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi</a>. Broome's been a dominant force for the nation's No. 1 team, ranking in the NCAA's top 10 for double-doubles (15), rebounds (10.9 per contest), and blocks (2.7). His 18.1 points per game are the second-best mark in the SEC. Meanwhile, Flagg is looking to become the first-ever freshman to lead their team in every major statistical category (points, rebounds, assists, blocks, and steals) and play in the NCAA Tournament. His 42-point effort against Notre Dame last month set a new ACC single-game freshman scoring record.<h3>Hubert Davis' future</h3>North Carolina's lopsided losses to Duke and Clemson are the latest blow to its NCAA Tournament hopes. The Tar Heels' 20-point defeat to the Tigers last week had head coach Hubert Davis <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/north-carlolina-coach-hubert-davis-just-sad-about-teams-lack-of-urgency-after-blowout-loss-to-clemson/">questioning</a> his team's lack of urgency. North Carolina shouldn't have trouble finding motivation at this point of the season, especially with a resume-building win on the line. The Tar Heels are just 1-10 in Quad 1 matchups, and a weaker ACC puts them in serious danger of missing their second Big Dance in three years. That's unacceptable for a blue-blood program and will likely cost Davis his job.<h3>Gonzaga's tourney streak</h3>Gonzaga's 25 consecutive trips to the Big Dance are the second-longest active streak behind Michigan State. The Bulldogs are safely in the NCAA Tournament field as a No. 8 seed, according to <a href="https://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/page/bracketology/ncaa-bracketology-2025-march-madness-men-field-predictions">Lunardi</a>. However, they've already suffered their most WCC defeats (three) since the 2015-16 campaign. A loss or two in conference play usually isn't too damaging for the Zags, but they don't have many quality non-conference victories to lean on this time. Gonzaga is also <a href="https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-men/d1/ncaa-mens-basketball-net-rankings">47th</a> in wins above bubble, which is a new metric being used by the NCAA selection committee. Lunardi's latest bracket has UConn as one of the No. 8 seeds - a position that could see the Huskies face a No. 1 seed in a potential second-round matchup. Hurley will certainly want to avoid that with a strong finish to the season - a stretch that's highlighted by a date this Sunday at Big East leader St. John's.<h3>Calipari's tourney charge</h3>Arkansas left the court Jan. 18 after a blowout loss to Missouri to sit 0-5 in SEC play and essentially take all the shine off John Calipari's hire. However, Calipari and the Razorbacks have since cleaned things up to an extent, winning four of their next seven contests to get back in the NCAA Tournament picture. The standout performance from that stretch - both professionally and personally - had to be Calipari's triumphant return to Kentucky to take out the Wildcats. The veteran coach can make a major statement this week with upcoming games at No. 1 Auburn and at home versus No. 15 Missouri. The top end of the conference remains elite, but the overall depth has fallen off dramatically. The conference has sent only five teams to each of the last three tournaments and features just three programs in the latest AP poll. Duke has rightfully received plenty of national attention this season, but the Blue Devils are the only top-15 ACC team nationally. In fact, Lunardi's latest projection has just four ACC teams in the tournament field, with Wake Forest currently the last team to qualify. That would match the lowest number of participants from the conference in 24 years.<h3>Another tourney team for Pitino</h3>The question now isn't if Rick Pitino will become the first man to take six different programs to the NCAA tournament, but whether he does so with St John's grabbing a top-four seed. The Hall of Fame coach missed out on March Madness in his first season with the Red Storm but showed early this season that things would be different in Year 2. St John's is a sparkling 22-4 with 11 wins in its last 12 games. Pitino's team has somehow achieved this level of success despite ranking 352nd out of 364 programs in 3-point shooting. Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised by that number, as his 2012 and 2013 Louisville teams are the only squads in the last 12 years to make the Final Four shooting less than 33% from deep, <a href="https://x.com/TheFieldOf68/status/1891865260690112512">according to the Field of 68</a>.

The Trojans phenom averaged 30.7 points, 10.3 boards, 2.7 blocks, and 2.3 steals in three meetings against the Bruins last season. She took center stage once again in the Battle of L.A., registering 38 points, 11 boards, eight blocks, five assists, and one steal to lift USC past previously undefeated UCLA. Watkins is the first Division I player to have at least 35 points, five blocks, and five dimes in a game over the past 20 seasons. She spent less than a minute on the bench during the entire tilt.Watkins' all-around skill set was on display from the jump. The sophomore blocked Bruins guard Kiki Rice on the second possession of the game and proceeded to knock down 6-of-7 attempts from deep in the first half. Watkins had no hesitation pulling up from distance, got some clean looks off dribble-handoffs with Kiki Iriafen, and effectively used the jab step to create a bit of space from her defender. The Trojans outscored their crosstown rivals 16-7 on the fast break, with Watkins serving as the catalyst for most of those transition opportunities. The 6-foot-2 guard has the speed and strength to go coast to coast as well as the court vision to seek out teammates on hit-ahead passes.<div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div>Watkins took over the final frame with her defense and sealed USC's first victory over a No. 1 team since 1983. She showed great timing with her digs on UCLA center Lauren Betts and helped on defense when needed. Watkins had three swats in a 1:05 span at the beginning of the fourth quarter and another pair of rejections on Betts in the final 2:31. It was the Gamecocks' largest defeat at Colonial Life Arena since December 2008, according to <a href="https://x.com/alexaphilippou/status/1891215828999114951">ESPN's Alexa Philippou</a>.Geno Auriemma's squad put forth a clinical performance after some recent struggles under the bright lights. UConn made only 14 triples and 23.7% of its 3-point attempts in its three defeats. The Huskies nearly exceeded their three-game total against South Carolina alone, draining 13-of-28 attempts from downtown. Azzi Fudd followed up a career-high 34-point performance with six treys versus the reigning national champs, while Ashlynn Shade added three makes from deep.Some of the Huskies' outside looks were a product of pushing the pace. Paige Bueckers constantly found Fudd and Shade leaking upcourt on multiple occasions before South Carolina could set up its stingy half-court defense. UConn had 31 fast-break points against the Gamecocks after failing to crack double digits in that department in two of their three losses. The Huskies' dominance on the glass also fueled their transition game. Freshman Sarah Strong had 12 defensive rebounds, Bueckers corralled six, and Jana El Alfy had four.UConn executed its game plan to perfection and got the desired result in spite of a 3-of-12 outing from Bueckers. Sophomore forward Madison Booker has raised her level of play, averaging 18.3 points, 9.7 boards, 3.3 assists, and 2.3 steals over her past three appearances. When her shot wasn't falling against LSU, she found ways to get to the charity stripe and made a pair of key jumpers down the stretch of a tight game. Taylor Jones and Kyla Oldacre are spearheading a Longhorns interior attack that averaged 43.1 points in the paint and 18.9 second-chance points entering Sunday's play. The post tandem has recorded a combined 24.7 points and 13.3 boards per contest across the previous three games.Texas' defense has been equally responsible for the team's success, frequently forcing miscues, protecting the rim, and allowing few threes. Fourth-year guard Rori Harmon is the heart of the Longhorns' defense, applying constant pressure and taking charges.
