Pistons, Cunningham finalize 5-year, $224M rookie max

Cade Cunningham agreed to a five-year, $224-million maximum rookie extension with the Detroit Pistons that could become worth as much as $269 million, his agents told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Cunningham can reach the higher figure if he makes an All-NBA team, Wojnarowski adds.

The 22-year-old averaged 22.7 points, 7.5 assists, and 4.3 rebounds in 62 games last season. Despite his stellar play, the Pistons finished with a league-worst 14-68 record.

Detroit hasn't won more than 23 games since drafting the former Oklahoma State product first overall in 2021.

The Pistons recently reshaped the organization, hiring Trajan Langdon as president of basketball operations in May. He fired former Coach of the Year Monty Williams and replaced him with ex-Cleveland Cavaliers bench boss J.B. Bickerstaff.

Detroit selected G League forward Ron Holland with the fifth pick in June's NBA Draft. Over the offseason, the Pistons acquired Tim Hardaway Jr. from the Dallas Mavericks, added Tobias Harris and Malik Beasley in free agency, and re-signed Simone Fontecchio.
