Kidd: Vogel joining Mavs as coaching consultant
Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd said Wednesday that former Phoenix Suns bench boss Frank Vogel is joining his staff as a coaching consultant.
"It took a lot of begging, but he was talked into it and I'm happy he said yes," Kidd said, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
Kidd was part of Vogel's staff when the latter coached the Los Angeles Lakers. The pair led the Lakers to a championship in 2020. The Mavericks then hired Kidd in 2021 to become their next head coach.
L.A. parted ways with Vogel in 2022. The Suns hired him to coach the team in 2023 but moved on from the 50-year-old after going 49-33 in the regular season and getting ousted in the first round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Mavericks open their season at home against the San Antonio Spurs on Oct. 24. They then travel to Phoenix to play Vogel's former team on Oct. 26.
