Report: Davis won't need hand surgery, will miss at least 6 weeks

Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis avoided hand surgery following a second opinion from a specialist Tuesday, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania.

Reports earlier Tuesday said Davis would likely need surgery to repair damaged ligaments in his hand and would miss several months of action. Though he won't go under the knife, Davis will still reportedly miss at least six weeks, according to Charania.

The 32-year-old took issue with the earlier reports indicating he'd miss substantial time, calling them "lies" in a post on X.

The Mavericks are still reportedly engaged with multiple teams about possibly trading Davis by the Feb. 5 deadline despite his injury.

The five-time All-NBAer is averaging 20.4 points, 11.12 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.7 blocks, and 1.1 steals this season, but injuries have limited him to 20 out of a possible 40 games with Dallas. Davis missed nearly all of November due to a nagging calf issue, and his Mavs debut last season was marred by a re-aggravation of a groin injury that sidelined him for a month and a half.

The Mavericks are reportedly looking to move forward by building around 2025 No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg. The Duke product has missed just one game as a rookie while averaging 19.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.3 steals. He's already accrued 1,348 minutes as a member of the Mavs, well surpassing the 892 minutes racked up by Davis since his first game with Dallas last season.
