Alabama's Miller, potential top-3 pick, declares for NBA draft
Alabama wing Brandon Miller is entering the 2023 NBA Draft, he told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Miller is a potential top-three pick and could possibly be selected second after expected No. 1 pick Victor Wembanyama. He will forgo his remaining NCAA eligibility.
Miller, however, has faced intense scrutiny after his name surfaced during the capital murder case involving former Crimson Tide player Darius Miles and Michael Davis. In court, a police officer testified that Miles texted Miller to bring Miles' gun, which Davis allegedly used to fatally shoot 23-year-old Jamea Harris on the Tuscaloosa strip on Jan. 15.
The 20-year-old Miller has not been charged or accused with a crime surrounding the incident, and the school says he has been a cooperating witness. Alabama continued to play him amid the school's and police's respective investigations; he did not miss any of the Crimson Tide's 37 games throughout the year.
On the court, Miller averaged a team-high 18.8 points and 8.2 rebounds as a freshman, helping Nate Oats' squad win the SEC regular-season title with a 16-2 conference record (31-6 overall) and finish atop the final AP Poll. In the postseason SEC Tournament, the Tennessee native scored 20.3 points per game with 11 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 1.7 steals in three contests, helping Alabama win the tournament, which named him its MVP.
After a groin injury contributed to a zero-point performance in Alabama's NCAA Tournament opener against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Miller responded with a 19-point, seven-rebound showing in the second round to eliminate Maryland. He had nine points, 11 rebounds, and three assists against San Diego State, which eliminated the overall top-seeded Crimson Tide in the Sweet 16.
While French phenom Wembanyama is widely projected to go first overall on June 22, the order behind him has shifted a bit since the start of the campaign. G League Ignite guard Scoot Henderson was initially seen as the likely No. 2 pick, though Miller's season has given Henderson stiff competition for the slot.
