Report: Michigan eyeing Utah's Whittingham as next coach
Michigan has turned its attention toward Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham in its search for a new sideline boss, sources told ESPN's Dan Wetzel and Pete Thamel.
The Wolverines and Whittingham are expected to finalize a deal Friday, Wetzel and Thamel add.
Whittingham announced earlier in December that he plans to step down after 21 seasons at Utah. He is the winningest coach in Utes history, posting a 177-88 record.
If he accepts the Michigan job, there will be a decision soon on whether he'd still coach Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 31, according to Wetzel and Thamel.
Michigan has been searching for a new head coach since firing Sherrone Moore on Dec. 10 after an investigation found "credible evidence" that he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.
The Wolverines were previously linked to Alabama's Kalen DeBoer and Arizona State's Kenny Dillingham. However, DeBoer shut down speculation about him leaving Alabama, saying he is very happy at the program. Dillingham signed a five-year contract with Arizona State after the rumors linking him to Michigan emerged.
Biff Poggi is Michigan's interim coach. He said this week he hopes he can become the Wolverines' permanent coach, stating that he wants to "fix this program."
Michigan faces Texas in the Citrus Bowl on Dec. 31.
